Back to 2 inch mortar Photographs

An airborne soldier in full fighting order, 1943-44. He is wearing the standard 1937 pattern webbing, and carries a 2 inch mortar as well as his No 4 rifle. The later 1943 pattern gas mask is worn fastened on the waist belt. The 1908 pattern entrenching tool (re-introduced and adapted for use with the 1937 pattern webbing equipment) is worn. The entrenching helve is the earlier pattern; the later pattern had a metal fitting on the end, similar to the muzzle of the No 4 rifle, so that the bayonet could be fitted to it, for use as a mine prodder. Also carried is a toggle rope and cotton bandolier of extra .303 ammunition.
