David Ronald Smith joined The Parachute Regiment in 1973 and was posted to 6 Platoon, B Company (Coy) 2 PARA, after completing basic training. He transferred to the Mortar Platoon (Pl) in 1977.He moved to Junior Parachute Company, at Depot, as a Corporal in 1983, and returned to 2 PARA's Mortar Pl as Sergeant in 1985.
A posting to Dering Lines as an instructor at Junior Division, School of Infantry, followed in 1987.
In 1989, David Smith joined 3 PARA as Company Quartermaster Sergeant A Coy, and then went to B Coy, 1 PARA, as Company Sergeant Major in the following year.
His last posting, prior to retirement from the Army in 1995, was Senior Permanent Staff Instructor at 12 Coy, 4 PARA (V).
