Walter J Dyton initially enlisted into the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, prior to volunteering for airborne forces.He attended RAF Ringway for parachute course 52, which ran from 22 February to 8 March 1943. Upon completion he was posted to The 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion.

Sgt Dyton served with 1 Platoon, A Company, 7th (LI) Para Bn in Normandy. A local paper reported:

‘Sgt Dyton who is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. Dyton has been twice wounded and once injured in France, since he went away abroad on D-Day. Reported missing for nine days it was later discovered that in making a heavy parachute landing, he sustained an injury to the knee. Later he suffered from shrapnel wounds and his third injury was from a mortar shell. He is now receiving hospital treatment in England.’  (Source and date unknown.)
