Raymond Halliday, son of Henry and Nancy Halliday and husband of Lily Halliday, of Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, enlisted into The Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.Lance Corporal Halliday successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to A company, 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

L/Cpl Halliday was killed in action by a shell in a trench in defensive company positions near Oranjeweg on 24 September 1944, aged 28. He was originally buried in a grave as an unknown soldier but recent research has identified his grave and a new headstone bearing his details was commemorated at a service in September 2016 at Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Arnhem.
