Vernon Edward Castle, son of Edward Castle and Elsie Castle; husband of Jose Castle, of Worcester Park, Surrey, enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.Staff Sargeant Castle successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to F Squadron, 2nd Wing, Glider Pilot Regiment and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

S/Sgt Castle was killed in action on 25 September 1944, aged 23, whilst on patrol with other glider pilots in the Dennenkamp area and was given a field burial in Renkum, near the railway station. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 4 November 1948.
