Joseph O'Shaughnessy Mallen volunteered for airborne forces in 1943 and attended parachute training course 59 at RAF Ringway as a Lance Corporal. The course ran from 5 to 16 April 1943 and comprised of a course cadre of 188 trainees. The course report records that L/Cpl Mallen was a "hard worker who jumped well".On completion of his parachute training Joe served with the 6th Parachute Battalion.
