David Edward Mahoney was born and lived in Chester. He enlisted in January 1963.He passed basic training at Park Hall Lines, Oswestry before passing P Company and military parachute training at RAF Abingdon on course 577 in May 1963.

Gunner Mahoney was then posted to F Battery , 7 PARA RHA and served in Aden until he was invalided home with a shoulder injury. He left 7 PARA RHA in 1968.
