Spencer commissioned from Sandhurst in 1997 and joined 10 Platoon, D Company, 2 PARA.
He served with 2 PARA until 2003 as Anti-Tank platoon commander and later as the Intelligence officer.
Spencer deployed on operations in Northern Ireland, Kosova, Macedonia and Oman in support of Operation Fingal.
